Ministry of Rural Development seeks additional funds of Rs 25,000 crore for MGNREGS – Mintpaisa

The Ministry of Rural Development has requested additional funds of around Rs 25,000 crore for the MGNREGS, which clearly indicates an increase in demand for the work, sources said on Tuesday. The ministry has requested Rs 25,000 crore from the Ministry of Finance and it is expected that the funds will be allocated by the second week of this month, the sources said.

In the Union budget for 2022-23, an amount of Rs 73,000 crore has been allocated to the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS). Of this amount, around Rs 54,000 crore has been allocated to the states so far, the sources said.

About 181 million person-days of work have also been generated under the program so far, they added.

The total expenditure of MGNREGS is expected to touch the level of Rs 98,000 crore of the last financial year.

The government would seek parliamentary approval for the allocation of additional funds under the MNREGA through the first batch of additional grant applications to be tabled in the upcoming winter session.

The MGNREGS aims to improve the livelihood security of households in rural areas of the country by providing at least 100 days of guaranteed wage employment during a financial year to each household, whose adult members volunteer to carry out unskilled manual labor.
